The Australian Science Communicators are hosting the conference in collaboration with the World Federation of Science Journalists.

     

Social functions

The evening receptions and Friday day tours are included in the registration fee (except for students). Additional tickets can be purchased for each evening reception. They can be booked and paid for ahead of time via the registration form.

There will be some public forums over the time of the conference. More information will be posted shortly.

Evening receptions during the conference:

Monday evening - welcome

  • 6 pm to 8 pm

  • Sponsored and presented by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation

  • Venue: Grand Hyatt hotel Savoy ballroom

Join us for the welcome reception and opening ceremony sponsored and presented by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

We’ll have light food, Aussie wine and the ABC will introduce us to Australian indigenous culture, science and natural history.

The welcome reception is included in the registration fee for all full delegates - day-registered delegates and students can buy tickets at the registration desk.

Tuesday evening reception - polar science

  • 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm

  • Sponsored by Canada Foundation for Innovation and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada

  • Venue: Melbourne Aquarium, corner Flinders and King Street

Immerse yourself in good food, fine company and the wonders of the deep at the Melbourne Aquarium as we celebrate International Polar Year.

Brave the aquarium’s virtual simulator ride; marvel at the myriad fish, octopi and sea jellies, stars and snakes; surround yourself with grey nurse sharks, eagle rays and marine turtles; and take in the view over the Yarra River at night.

This reception is included as a part of full registration.

Delegates can walk or catch a tram along Flinders Street. (approx 6 blocks from conference venue)

Wednesday evening reception - theatre of science

  • 6.30 to 8.30 pm

  • Hosted and sponsored by the University of Melbourne

  • Venue: The Theatre of Science, Bio21 Institute, The University of Melbourne, 30 Flemington Road

Science and theatre will creatively merge in the spectacular glass atrium of the Bio21 Institute. A new Science magazine will be launched. Three talented journalists of the future will be honoured. Drinks and canapés will be provided. Prepare for enjoyment.

This reception is included as a part of full registration.

Transport will be provided from the Hyatt Hotel. Or delegates can catch a taxi (10 minutes from conference venue, approximate taxi cost $15)

  • 8.30 to 10.30 pm Stargazing at the Royal Botanic Gardens

  • Hosted and sponsored by the University of Melbourne

  • Venue: The Observatory, Royal Botanic Gardens

Be guided in your viewing of the southern stars by leading astronomers from the University of Melbourne. Telescopes will be set up on the lawns at the historic Melbourne Observatory in the Royal Botanic Gardens, once a leading facility for mapping the stars.

Meet Professor Rachel Webster and share in the vision for a new telescope that will probe the origins of the Universe. Enjoy drinks, canapés and entertainment in the Observatory Café.

Transport will be provided from the Theatre of Science reception at Bio21.

Thursday evening happy hour

  • 5.30 to 6.30 pm Happy hour

  • Venue: Grand Hyatt hotel exhibition area

Announcement of the winner of the bid for the 6th World Conference of Science Journalists

Thursday evening farewell reception

  • 6.30 pm for 7 pm Farewell reception

  • Hosted by David de Kretser, The Governor of Victoria and sponsored by the government of Victoria

  • Venue: Government House

Buses will depart from the conference venue at 6.20 pm and 6.40 pm

Friday tours

On Friday 20 April, there are six tours on offer in and around Melbourne to science and tourism destinations. The tours all leave from the conference venue on Friday morning and vary in length. Most cover lunch. For some tours there is a small cost toward national park entrance fees.

These tours are included in the registration fee and can be booked through your registration log in page.
